At the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, an embarrassing mistake occurred when South Korea was introduced as North Korea.
On July 26th, during the parade of athletes along the Seine River, the South Korean delegation, consisting of about 50 members, was the 48th to enter among the 206 participating countries. This position was based on the French name 'Corée,' following the Cook Islands.
As the South Korean athletes made their entrance, the announcer mistakenly introduced them in French as 'République populaire démocratique de Corée' and in English as 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea,' both of which refer to North Korea. The correct French and English names for South Korea are 'République de Corée' and 'Republic of Korea,' respectively.
Later, North Korea, which entered 153rd based on the French naming convention, was correctly introduced in both French and English.
This error led to confusion among viewers who did not watch the video but only listened to the announcements, making them believe that North Korea had entered twice and South Korea not at all.
